Kindness Stories for Kids: How to Talk About Friendship at Read-Aloud Time
Young children learn kindness from what they see and hear, and stories are one of the gentlest ways to show it. A short picture book about friendship gives you a natural way to talk about sharing, helping and welcoming others, without it feeling like a lesson.
Why stories work so well for teaching kindness
When children follow a character, they practise imagining how someone else feels. That is the first step of empathy. A story also gives you shared words for later: "Remember how the friends helped when they were lost? Can we help like that?"
What to look for in a kindness story
- Simple, repeated moments of kindness children can copy in real life: sharing, helping, saying hello.
- A character children care about, often a small one who needs help.
- Bright, clear pictures that let pre-readers follow the story on their own.
- Different places and people, so children see that kindness looks familiar everywhere.
- The right length: for ages 3 to 7, a story you can read in a few minutes.
Read-aloud tips
- Look at the cover first. Ask, "What do you think will happen?"
- Pause on the pictures. Let your child point things out.
- Use voices and expression. It keeps little ones listening.
- Ask about feelings at key moments: "How do you think he feels now?"
- Read it again. Young children love repetition, and each re-read deepens understanding.
Questions to talk about after the story
- Who was kind in the story? What did they do?
- How did the character feel before and after someone helped?
- Has someone been kind to you this week?
- What is one kind thing we could do tomorrow?
- How could we help someone who is new or far from home feel welcome?
Simple activities to follow up
- Draw a picture of a kind thing you did or saw today.
- Make a "kindness jar" and add a paper slip for each kind act in the family or classroom.
- Colour a page from the story and give it to someone as a gift.
- Find the places from the story on a map or globe.

Kiko the Kite Flies Around the World is a gentle picture book for ages 3 to 7. When a gust of wind snaps his string, Kiko flies around the world, through the mountains, the desert, the rainforest, the snowy north and a busy city, and in each place a new friend gives him a small gift. It comes as an illustrated eBook for tablets and phones plus printable A4 and US Letter editions, with "Let's talk about it" questions, a draw-your-own-kite activity and a colour-in page. It works well at bedtime, in classrooms and at storytime.
